When does a producer need a split sheet?

A producer needs a split sheet any time they co-own part of the composition. If the producer wrote chords, melody, arrangement, or contributed creatively to the song structure, they have an ownership stake that must be documented.

If the producer was hired on a flat-fee basis with no ownership (work-for-hire), a split sheet is not the right document. Use a work-for-hire agreement instead.

What to include on a producer split sheet

• Song title — the project or track name.
• Date — when the collaboration happened or ownership was agreed.
• All contributors — every person with an ownership stake, including the producer.
• Roles — label the producer’s specific role (producer, beat maker, co-producer, arranger).
• Percentages — each person’s ownership share, totalling exactly 100%.
• Signatures — every contributor signs to confirm they agree.

How to determine the producer’s percentage

The percentage depends on the producer’s contribution. A beat maker who provided the instrumental typically gets 15%–25%. A full producer who shaped the arrangement, wrote chord progressions, and contributed to the melody may get 30%–50%. Producer split sheet vs. work-for-hire agreement
