Split sheet for songwriters

If you co-write songs, you need a split sheet for every collaboration. Here’s what to know and how to create one.

Why songwriters need split sheets

Every co-written song has multiple owners. Without a split sheet, there’s no record of who owns what. This creates problems when registering with PROs, collecting royalties, or licensing the song. A split sheet prevents all of it.

When to create one

Create a split sheet during or immediately after the writing session. Don’t wait until release, registration, or a publishing deal. The conversation gets harder with time.

What to include

  • Song title and date
  • Full name and role of each songwriter
  • Ownership percentage for each person
  • PRO affiliation and IPI/CAE number (optional but helpful)
  • Signatures from all writers

How to create one

Use the split sheet generator to add all songwriters, assign percentages, and download a completed PDF. If you need detailed terms for licensing or publishing, use the co-writer agreement generator instead.

How to determine percentages

Use the music split calculator to determine fair ownership based on each person’s contribution to lyrics, melody, production, and arrangement.
