Split sheet for film composers

Film scoring often involves complex ownership arrangements. Here’s how to use split sheets and agreements for film music.

Film scoring is often work-for-hire

Most studio film scoring deals are work-for-hire: the composer is paid a fee, and the production company owns the music. If this applies, use a work-for-hire agreement.

When composers retain ownership

Independent films, short films, and some TV projects allow composers to retain publishing rights. In these cases, a split sheet or co-writer agreement documents the split.

Co-composed scores

When two or more composers collaborate on a score, use a split sheet to document each composer’s ownership percentage. Use the music split calculator to determine fair percentages based on contribution.
