How to make a split sheet

This guide walks you through filling out a split sheet step by step. If you haven’t decided on percentages yet, start with {page:how-to-split-song-ownership:how to split song ownership}. Not sure {page:what-is-a-split-sheet:what a split sheet is}? Read that first.

What you need before starting

  • Song title and date
  • Full legal name of every contributor
  • Each person’s role (songwriter, producer, lyricist, etc.)
  • Agreed ownership percentages that total 100%
  • Signatures from all parties

Step 1: List all contributors

Include every person who contributed creatively to the composition. This means songwriters, lyricists, composers, and producers who shaped the musical content. Session musicians paid a flat fee are typically excluded (they should use a work-for-hire agreement instead).

Step 2: Agree on percentages

All percentages must add up to exactly 100%. If you’re not sure how to divide it, use the music split calculator to determine a fair split based on contributions. For producer-specific percentages, see what percentage producers typically get.

Step 3: Fill out the split sheet

Use the split sheet generator to enter names, roles, and percentages. The tool creates a professional PDF with signature lines automatically. Or download a blank template if you prefer to fill it in by hand.

Step 4: Get signatures

Print the document and have every contributor sign and date it. Keep copies for all parties. For a tamper-proof digital alternative, finalize the record in CAZEN.
