Beat license vs. exclusive rights

A beat license lets you use a beat under specific terms. Exclusive rights means the beat is yours alone. These are fundamentally different deals with different ownership implications, different price points, and different documentation requirements.

Beat license (non-exclusive)

  • The beat maker retains ownership of the composition and master
  • You get a license to use the beat (with limits on streams, sales, or time)
  • The same beat can be licensed to multiple artists
  • Price range: $20–$200 typically
  • No split sheet needed unless you’re co-writing over it
  • The license agreement (from the beat maker) is the governing document

Exclusive rights

  • The beat is removed from sale — no other artist can use it
  • Ownership terms vary: the beat maker may retain 20–50% or transfer 100%
  • Price range: $300–$5,000+ depending on the beat maker
  • Requires a written agreement defining ownership transfer
  • If co-ownership: use a split sheet
  • If full transfer: use a work-for-hire agreement

The key question: who owns the composition?

With a lease, the beat maker owns the composition. With exclusive rights, it depends on the contract. Many exclusive purchases include co-ownership where the beat maker keeps 20–30% of the composition. Only a work-for-hire arrangement transfers 100%. Never assume “exclusive” means “you own everything.” Read the contract.

What about publishing?

In a lease, the beat maker retains all publishing. In an exclusive deal with co-ownership, publishing splits follow the ownership percentages. In a work-for-hire deal, you get all publishing. For more detail, read can a producer claim publishing and how to split publishing rights.

Which do you need?

Starting out with a limited budget? A lease works. Ready to invest in a beat you want to build a career on? Buy exclusive. For exclusive deals, see who owns a beat after purchase to understand what you’re actually getting. Use the producer split calculator to estimate a fair co-ownership split.
